Oakland County Genealogical Society -- Last meeting of the program year

On Tuesday, June 4, 2013 the Oakland County Genealogical Society is pleased to present a program titled "Secrets of the Dead" by OCGS member Sandy Kinter.  Join us as we search for some of the Secrets of the Dead – as we “walk” through this “virtual” cemetery.  Learn the meanings of the various symbols often found on tombstones.  What useful information can the genealogist find on those stone slabs?  There will be no need for insect spray or sunscreen on this cemetery visit.  Please join us for this interesting and informative presentation.   The Society meets at Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois Road, Troy, MI 48083.  The TCC is located just north of Big Beaver Road on the west side of Livernois.  The meeting will start at 7:00 PM and the public is invited.  There is no charge.  The Troy Community Center has a flat entrance and ample lighted parking.

On Tuesday, May 7, 2013 the Oakland County Genealogical Society is pleased to present a program titled “Creating Your Family History with Microsoft’s Publisher together with Ten Simple Steps for Sharing it” by Gloria Saluk.  Collecting your “Dead Relatives” is only the first step in being a good genealogist.  After you save it, you have to share it.  Gloria Saluk demonstrates the basics of using Microsoft’s Publisher program to create family histories you can share with your relatives. Included are her ten steps for putting it all together – and how to have fun doing it.  Please join us for this interesting and informative presentation.   OCGS meets at the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois Road, Troy, MI 48083.  Because of the special mayoral election that evening, our meeting is being switched to room 402.  The TCC is located just north of Big Beaver Road on the west side of Livernois.  The meeting will start at 7:00 PM and the public is invited.  There is no charge.  The Troy Community Center has a flat entrance and ample lighted parking. ________________________________________________________ The Southfield Public Library will host a program, “Detroit's Historic Places of Worship”, as a part of the Library of Michigan's 2013 Michigan Notable Authors Tour. This event will be held on Wednesday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in the Library's Meeting Room. The evening's program will be presented by author Barbara Krueger, who will discuss the architecture of some of the churches as well as her specialty, stained glass. _______________________________________________________ The Michigan death certificates (images and index) are now on-line at FamilySearch.org. Oakland County Genealogical Society Message - addition to the 1890 census substitute project

Great news, our volunteers have completed the indexing of the 1884, 1889, and 1893 tax assessment rolls for Independence Township, Oakland County Michigan. The list is posted on our website under the heading Free Genealogical Data > 1890 Census Substitute Project for Oakland County. It will take 24-48 hours before the names are included in the main site search results, but you can search each page using +F for your names, or simple read through them. The images are posted at <a href="http://oaklandcountyhistory.org">http://oaklandcountyhistory.org</a> and linked from our site. A press release is posted on the front page of the website, <a href="http://www.ocgsmi.org">http://www.ocgsmi.org</a>. We would like to thank the volunteers who contributed to this project: Susan VanKirk Beyer, Beverly Lancaster, Concerta Phillipps, Shirley Reeve, Judy Suszko and Pam Warren. We are glad to have such willing volunteers to help researchers of Oakland County ancestors. We are still working hard on indexing the surname charts which have been submitted to the Society over the years. Packets of 5 pages are available and should take about an hour to type into a spreadsheet. We'd love to finish this project before summer arrives, please volunteer to help with the indexing. It has come to our attention that at least some of the Quarterlies which were mailed this week were stapled together incorrectly. We are working with the printer on corrective action, including prevention of future occurrences. It is possible to removed the staples and re-staple the cover in the correct orientation. Oakland County Genealogical Society Message Meeting reminde

The Society will meet on Tuesday April 2, 2013 at The Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois Road, Troy, MI 48083 (just north of Big Beaver). The community center has a flat entrance and ample lighted parking. Meetings are open to the public and free of charge; all are welcome. The program: “When a Rose is Not a Rose: Women Soldiers in the Civil War”, will be presented by Judith Coebly. Most of us are unaware that almost 900 women served surreptitiously as soldiers in the Civil War even though the Union and Confederate armies would not accept women into their ranks. When their true identities were discovered, these patriots in disguise were sometimes punished, always removed, and told to return home. Most reenlisted in other units – sometimes seven or eight times. They fought like demons and would not quit. Judith Coebly’s presentation includes vignettes of their experiences, accompanied by photographs and etchings. The Society has two transcription projects in full swing. We are indexing the 1884, 1889 and 1893 censuses of Independence Township, which we will add to our Oakland County 1890 census subtitute project at: <a href="http://www.ocgsmi.org/free-genealogical-data/1890-census-substitute-project-for-oakland-county/">www.ocgsmi.org/free-genealogical-data/1890-census-substitute-project-for-oakland-county/</a>. Oakland County Genealogical Society Message - Help indexing for the 1890 Census Substitute Project

We have great news, Independence Township has allowed the Society to have three years of their tax assesment records, 1884, 1889, and 1893, imaged to include in our 1890 census substitute project. The imaging is complete and we are ready to index the names. Funds for the digitizztion  from the Ruth Kennedy Memorial Fund were used for the digitization. and were authorized by the OCGS Board of Directors. We need to make an index, not transcribe the entire page, so the work should go quickly. When the index is complete it will be uploaded to our website, and the index and images will be uploaded to Oakland County Historic Resources. Researchers will be able to view and download the images which contain their ancestor's name. There are only 24 packets of 10 pages each. Each page has 2-8 names, so this should be quickly. The images and form will be send by e-mail to volunteers. You need to be able to use a spreadsheet to enter the names. If you can volunteer to do a packet or two please reply to this e-mail, and specify what spreadsheet program you will use.
